background

It was a freelance project for a startup. The client approached me with an idea for an app that would allow real estate agents and property owners to create high-quality visual content using their phones quickly. All you have to do is capture the content and the app will edit it and prepare it for sharing on real estate portals.

Problems

Right now people capture raw visual content and manually edit it for real estate listings, the process is time-consuming and requires specialized skills;

Relying on professionals to produce high-quality property media is costly and often delays market engagement.

goal

Design an MVP for the app that provides users with guidance on how to shoot a video and automates the editing process so users can quickly transform raw footage into polished media, making it easy to share on real estate portals without the hassle of manual editing or the expense of hiring. The MVP should be first designed for iOS.

User research

Let’s discover user needs and pain points in real estate content creation.

Research goals

•

Understand the current process of content creation in real estate;

•

Learn about current pain points with content creation;

•

Learn what would they need in order to make content creation process easier and faster.

Call with the client

We jumped on a call with my client where we discussed overall idea of the project, goals, and target audience. He explained me how do people currently create a real estate media and frustrations they usually have during this process. We also outlined the target audience for the app:

•

Real Estate Agents & Brokers – Need high-quality visual content to market properties quickly and effectively;

•

Property Owners & Sellers – Want to create professional-looking media without hiring expensive photographers or videographers.

User surveys

Asking people what they think

Although I gathered some insights from the client, we also decided to conduct a qualitative user survey to collect more data. Once I had identified the right people to ask questions to, I moved on to creating a user survey using the Maze tool. A total of 20 people responded, which helped me better understand users' pain points and whether they really need a tool for automated editing.

Key insights form the surveys:

Users find their current content creation process time-consuming. High average scores indicate a strong pain point regarding time efficiency;

Users are willing to try an automated solution. A strong positive response suggests that users are open to adopting a new tool that saves time;

Users would like to have a guidance to create visually appealing and engaging content.

competitive audit

Prerecorded video guides would be helpful for creating engaging real estate videos

I analyzed the 3 most popular apps for creating real estate content and found out that it takes a maximum of 3 clicks to get to the recording process. I also noticed that they use prerecorded video guides so users can record videos properly.

Key insights form the audit:

Add project details after a video has been captured;

Add predefined scenes so users can easily create content;

Add ā€œReplace videoā€ and ā€œKeep videoā€ buttons.

Define

Defining core features for MVP

At this stage, it was crucial to pinpoint the features necessary for the MVP to work effectively and enable users to complete its core tasks. To achieve this, I created a prioritization matrix that allowed me to rank all potential features by importance, ensuring that only the essential ones were included to align with the project’s budget and timeline.

Our success metrics:

Metric: Editing Completion Rate.

user flow

Let’s map out a core task users should perform

After we were alined on what features we need for MVP to work properly, I moved on to creating a user flow to outline each step users take and ensure that the core task is easy to understand and complete.

Wireframes

We moved on to creating and testing wireframes.

After having the user flow done it was the time to start creating wireframes so we can visualize early concepts of the actual app test them on the real users.

User testing

After I finished the wireframes I moved on to the user testing.

Testing goals:

•

See if the user flow is easy to go through;

•

Whether users are able to achieve final point in the flow;

•

Gather a feedback on current flow and wireframes.

For this, I created a clickable prototype and first showed it to the client. After I gathered some feedback from my client I uploaded the clickable prototype into the Maze tool to test the wireframe on the real users.

Key insights form the user testing:

From the user testing we found out that people understand what the app is about.

Next up, some users reported they didn’t understand you should fill in all the scene on Create video screen;

25% of the users reported that it’s hard to complete the core action and the overall experience could be improved;

I want to start shooting immediately. There are too many steps before I can start recording.

edits

Let’s implement changes and iterate

Once I gathered important feedback from the user testing I moved on to implementing changes.

Before there were 2 separate screens for submitting for editing and final video. I replaced these two screens with one ā€œEdit Your Videoā€ screen where users are ble to adjust a video editing and export it.

I combined the video preview with the editing options alongside. Once users tap "Export video," the video begins rendering, and then a iOS share screen appears.

Final Designs

We then turn these ideas into high fidelity designs.

At this stage, we decided to create a lightweight design system to provide developers with clear design guidelines and ensure the app can be easily expanded in the future.

Next steps

Development

I delivered high-fidelity designs, wireframes, clickable prototype to the client. I also provided developers with the design system I mentioned earlier making development process smooth.

Updates and expansion

The MVP is now live, and our client is actively testing it in the real estate market. We're gathering real user feedback and keeping a close eye on how it's performing. If the response is strong, he'll expand the app’s features and continue developing it to better serve real estate professionals and property owners.

Takeaways

  1. Prioritisation is a key when building an MVP

Prioritization is crucial when building an MVP because it helps you focus on delivering the core features, reduce costs, and ensure that the product is ready to validate its value in the market as quickly as possible.

  1. It was important to develop at least a small design system

The clear handoff and design system facilitated smooth collaboration between design and development teams, setting a strong foundation for future iterations.
